The Garden's namesake was a Richmond businessman and philanthropist who in 1895 purchased nine acres of what had once been Powhatan Indian hunting grounds. Ginter's niece, Grace Arents, bequeathed the land to Richmond, stipulating that it be used for a botanical garden to honor her uncle.
