The Center for the Performing Arts is the Cultural Cornerstone of Richmond
When you visit our Center for the Performing Arts, you'll be seeing a piece of Richmond history up close. The Center has hosted musicians, artists, and performers from all around the world. Events take place every week: Everything from the Beatles to the Batsheva Dance Company.
And it is, of course, home of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra. One of the most celebrated of America's orchestra companies, it fields more than 80 musicians in most seasons. They give more than 200 performances and are seen by more than 200,000 people.
The touchstone of the Center experience is the Carpenter Theater. This historic venue has been fully preserved, maintaining an Old World feel alongside fantastic modern amenities. It is renowned for some of the best acoustics of any large venue in the country.
When you visit the lobby, you'll have the chance to refresh yourself at four fully stocked bars. Don't forget to chat with the theater's oldest resident, the handmade parrot, which dates from the 1928 opening and in whose honor the room's murals were designed. The theater, too, retains striking elements from the original design, including its midnight sky ceiling with new fiber-optic stars.
The Center for the Performing Arts is safeguarded by the Richmond Performing Arts Alliance, a 501(c)(3) charity that supports diverse local arts and education initiatives. It's partly thanks to them that the Center offers a wide range of kid-friendly events, both for education and entertainment, as well as a place where budding thespians and musicians can get their start.
