Virginia Capital Trail – Richmond, VA

The Virginia Capital Trail connects Richmond, Virginia's current capital, with Jamestown, the original capital of the colony of Virginia. The trail stretches for more than 50 miles, passing parks, historic sites, and local landmarks along the way. It's a paved trail ideal for walking, running, and biking, with a wide range of routes to choose from so you can customize the length of every trip.

Shockoe Bottom Clay – Richmond, VA

Many of Richmond's excellent art galleries are free to visit, and you could easily spend a weekend exploring them all to learn more about local artists. Shockoe Bottom Clay is a working clay studio featuring nine separate studios, where you can watch the artists work in real-time. It's amazing watching the artists in action, and of course you can also see the finished products of their creativity displayed all around the studio. More than 30 local and regional artists work at Shockoe Bottom Clay regularly, including many who are based right here in Richmond.

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts – Richmond, VA

For nearly 100 years, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has been one of the country's top art museums, known for its expansive permanent collections, which highlight art from around the world. There are more than 40,000 pieces of art to see here, covering 6,000 years of art from America, Europe, Asia, and more. You'll also find a wide range of programs here, including lectures, art demonstrations, classes, and temporary, curated art exhibitions. There's no general admission cost to visit the museum, and it's open every day of the year.

Richmond Railroad Museum – Richmond, VA

There's so much history to discover in Richmond, with many historic attractions in Richmond and nearby communities offering free admission. The Richmond Railroad Museum is always free to visit, highlighting the important role that railroads and trains have played in Richmond's history. The museum is located within a restored, historic railway car and station, featuring an extensive collection of photos and artifacts that tell the story of rail travel through local history.
