Richmond Hikes

We're officially in the dog days of summer, those last blazing hot weeks before the weather breaks and fall brings a cooling breeze through Central Virginia. What better time to go for a hike?

Our real estate agents are excited to share some of their favorite late summer hikes in the Richmond area. None of these trails are too difficult—it's hot out there, after all—so they're perfect for sunny days. Just be sure to pack some sunscreen and plenty of water!

  • North Bank Trail - 1503 Kansas Ave, Richmond, VA 23220
Hugging the north shore of the James River, the North Bank Trail is part of an extensive trail network within James River Park. In addition to being convenient to countless Richmond homes for sale, this trail offers some of the best views of the river. The terrain is easy to moderate, and there are multiple trailheads, parking areas, and access points. The North Bank Trail is often hiked as a 2.8-mile out-and-back, but it can also be combined with the Buttermilk Trail on the opposite side of the river to form a 6.1-mile loop.

  • Bryan Park - 4308 Hermitage Rd, Richmond, VA 23227
Bryan Park is a city park that spans 262 acres on Richmond's north side. It's a beautiful urban oasis and is cut off from the city by interstates on three sides, making it feel all the more secluded. From the park entrance on Hermitage Road, visitors can explore many miles of trails that traverse wildflower meadows, mature hardwood forests, creek bottoms, and ponds. The 1.9-mile Bryan Park Loop is a perfect trail to start exploring.

  • Harrison's Creek Loop - Siege Rd, Petersburg, VA 23804
Part of an extensive 10-mile trail system within Petersburg National Battlefield, the beautiful Harrison's Creek Loop forms a 3.2-mile circuit through wooded hills not far from the heart of Petersburg. In addition to picturesque scenery and excellent birding opportunities, the trail traverses an area that played a pivotal role in the Civil War. Many charming Petersburg homes for sale are close by, and hikers can also explore the nearby monuments, battlefields, and visitor centers.

  • Belle Isle Trails - 1 Belle Isle, Richmond, VA 23225
Belle Ise is a rocky, wooded, 54-acre island that sits midstream in the James River, within view of Downtown Richmond. Managed as part of the James River Park system, the island is home to a meandering labyrinth of walking and mountain biking trails. The popular Belle Isle Trails loop that follows the circumference of the island is 1.9 miles round-trip, and it leads to some beautiful swimming, wading, and fishing spots. Many more trails crisscross the interior, allowing for a wide range of varied routes. Ample parking is available below the bridge that crosses the river above Belle Isle.

  • Larus Park Loop - 300 Hayden Hill Ln, Richmond, VA 23235
The 106-acre Larus Park Loop is a hidden gem in the Stony Point neighborhood, a quiet, residential area on the city's southeast side. Popular for running, hiking, and dog-walking, the 2.2-mile Larus Park Loop is one of several trails that traverse this densely wooded park's rolling terrain. The loop starts at the park's southern trailhead and meanders across rocky streams and a few boardwalk sections. It's a favorite spot among locals, so expect to see lots of other people on the trails on summer weekends, or plan a mid-week hike to enjoy more solitude.
