For 20 years, people have come from around the country to celebrate this rich tradition at the Richmond Folk Festival. An intriguing line-up of international performers showcases a spectrum of musical styles. Participants include iconic rockabilly guitarist Albert Lee, singer/composer Peni Candra Rini from Indonesia, and Native American hip-hop artist Supaman. Festival hours are 6:30 p.m. - 10 p.m. on Friday, 9/27; noon - 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, 9/28; and noon - 6 p.m. on Sunday, 9/29. Admission is free, and food, beverages, and merchandise will be on sale.

Poetry takes center stage in Petersburg! Discover a whole new perspective at Open Mic and Poetry Night. Talented writers from around the area take the stage to share their powerful and heartfelt words. Roscoe Burnems, award-winning slam poet and the first poet laureate of Richmond, serves as the featured poet of the evening. Mark your calendar for 7 p.m. on Friday, 9/13. Admission is $10.

Be one of the first to attend what's sure to become a yearly event with the Richmond International Dance Festival. Participate in three different 20-minute workshops where you'll learn dance moves from Indian, belly dancing, African, Panamanian, and Filipino styles. The day wraps up with a lively performance by all the groups together. During breaks, browse the food fair and vendor booths that will be onsite. The festival is scheduled for noon - 6 p.m. on Saturday, 9/7. Admission is free with registration on the website.

Movies can open up new worlds that transcend the boundaries of space and time. With 175 movies across a number of genres from 27 countries, the 13th annual Richmond International Film Festival promises a wide spectrum of experiences. Panel discussions and other special events take a deep dive into the art and business of filmmaking. Six years ago, RIFF expanded its artistic scope to incorporate a full-scale music festival featuring a lineup of local, national, and international acts. RIFF plays out in multiple venues around the city, including Bow Tie Cinemas and the historic Byrd Theatre. Dates are Tuesday, 9/24 through Sunday, 9/29.
