Richmond Kayaking

RVA is a year-round source of lively activities, but the area is really in its glory during the summer. With the scenic riverfront just minutes from Richmond homes for sale and Petersburg homes for sale, take in the fresh air and sunshine with these delightful places and activities that are favorites of our real estate agents.

  • Brown's Island – 401 S. 10th St., Richmond, VA 23219
In 1789, during the fledgling days of the Haxall Canal, Brown's Island was created. At the time, it had a "twin" in the form of Johnson's Island, but eventually, the two merged into one. Today, thanks to easy access from downtown Richmond and beautiful views of the urban waterfront, Brown's Island is a popular park for locals and visitors. Brown's Island is also a great venue for concerts and festivals such as Friday Cheers, a summer music series that takes place weekly at 6 p.m. Park hours are sunrise to sunset daily, and there is no admission fee.

  • Riverfront Canal Cruise – 139 Virginia St., Richmond, VA 23219
As part of his plan to boost economic development of the young republic he helped to liberate, George Washington urged Virginia's General Assembly to build a canal and turnpike system to facilitate trade between east and west. See what remains of Washington's vision during a Riverfront Canal Cruise. The 40-minute narrated tour traces the Canal Walk along the James River and Kanawha Canal. Covered boats, which accommodate up to 28 passengers, depart daily on the hour from noon – 7 p.m. Tickets are $7-$15.

  • James River Park – 4001 Riverside Dr., Richmond, VA 23225
As the capital city of Virginia, Richmond is a modern and thriving urban center. Fortunately, the city is also blessed with an incredible 600-acre natural oasis in James River Park. Upwards of 2 million people each year visit the pet-friendly park to explore 20+ miles of trails for hiking, biking, and wildlife-spotting. Walkers and bikers can also access the Virginia Capital Trail, a 52-mile corridor that extends to Williamsburg. Other activities include swimming and tubing, paddle boating, rock climbing, and fishing. James River Park is open 24/7, and admission is free.

  • Robious Landing Park – 3800 James River Rd., Midlothian, VA 23113
Whether you're a veteran birdwatcher or just starting out with this fascinating hobby, there's always something new to see at Robious Landing Park. Located right down the street from Midlothian homes for sale, the dog-friendly park is part of the Virginia Bird & Wildlife Trail. Songbirds, woodpeckers, and owls are often spotted along the 3.4 miles of hiking trails, while osprey, bald eagles, great blue herons, and other waterfowl may frequently be seen along the river bank. There's a boat slide for launching paddlecraft and a floating dock for fishing, along with a playground, sand volleyball court, and picnic area. Hours are 5 a.m. – 9 p.m. daily.

  • Richmond Jazz and Music Festival – Maymont, 1700 Hampton St., Richmond, VA 23220
Music almost always sounds better outdoors. That statement may not be scientifically accurate, but there's no denying the spectacular experience of the Richmond Jazz and Music Festival. After a three-year COVID-related hiatus, the beloved festival made a return to Maymont in 2023. Past lineups have included legendary singers and musicians such as Chaka Khan, Stanley Clarke, Herbie Hancock, and Jill Scott. This year's festival takes place on August 12-13.
