Richmond Hikes

Who needs an expensive fitness club? Our real estate agents stay fit while enjoying the beautiful sights at these great hiking trails, not far from Richmond homes for sale

  • Riverfront Canal Walk - 14th and Dock Sts., Richmond, VA 23219
Whether you're looking for a lunch hour break or a family-friendly outing, Riverfront Canal Walk fits the bill. The dog-friendly 1.25-mile path features a fascinating variety of artworks and exhibits that highlight Richmond's vibrant history. With multiple access points along the way, it's easy to make a side trip to one of Richmond's wonderful downtown restaurants.

  • Pony Pasture - 7200 Riverside Dr., Richmond, VA 23225
Pony Pasture got its name from the charming animals owned by local families who once frolicked on the grounds. Now hikers and their dogs are equally entertained exploring the wooded trails and inland meadows. Hop across the rocks to Williams Island, a 100-acre place that's city-owned and open to the public. After your hike, cool off with a dip in the refreshing rapids or just soak up the sun. Pony Pasture is open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset.

  • Buttermilk Trail - 4140 Hillcrest Rd., Richmond, VA 23225
Described as "fairytale-like," Buttermilk Trail is one of the more visually stunning paths around Richmond. Once named "Best Urban Trail" by Blue Ridge Outdoors, Buttermilk provides a welcome challenge with rocky sections, wooden bridges, and a moderate elevation gain. A profusion of wildflowers makes the trail particularly attractive during summer and fall. At the top, you can catch sight of the Virginia World War Memorial Carillon in William Byrd Park. Leashed dogs are welcome on the trail. Hours are sunrise to sunset daily.

  • Forest Hill Park - 4021 Forest Hill Ave., Richmond, VA 23225
Like many other spaces in Richmond, Forest Hill Park has a long and colorful history. At various times throughout the years, the grounds have held a quarry, a residential estate, and an amusement park. Now it includes a dog-friendly 2.7-mile loop trail with waterfalls, forests, lakes, and boardwalks. Plan a weekend hike and combine it with a visit to the South of the James Market. Each Sunday, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., area farmers and artisans gather at Forest Hill Park to sell locally-grown produce and handmade items. The park is open every day from sunrise to sunset.

  • Beaver Lake Trail - Pocahontas State Park, 1301 State Park Rd., Chesterfield, VA 23832
At 2.6 miles along a heavily wooded path, Beaver Lake Trail is a perfect outing for all members of the family, including Fido. The lily pad-covered lake and scenic spillway add to the aura of serenity. Add some length to the hike by connecting to the Ground Pine Trail. Parking fees are $7 on weekdays and $10 on weekends. Hours at Pocahontas State Park, just minutes from Chesterfield homes for sale, are 7:30 a.m. - dusk daily.

  • Fort Stedman Trail - Petersburg National Battlefield
Petersburg National Battlefield isn't far from Petersburg homes for sale and has many trails to choose from, including Fort Stedman Trail. This trail is an easier hike, so it's a good option for kids or dogs to tag along. This 1-mile loop takes you by the remains of Fort Stedman and has several info panels posted along the trail.

The best part of hiking? Going back to relax in your Richmond home. Whether you're buying or selling, contact us at Napier Realtors ERA for all your real estate needs.
