Build a Summer Fire Pit with These DIY Tips
There's no better way to spend a summer evening than gathering around a fire pit with a refreshing beverage, your friends and family, and everything you need to make tasty s'mores.
A fire pit makes an excellent addition to any property on the list of Richmond homes for sale. If your home is lacking a fire pit, consider creating your own for a custom look. Make your backyard fire pit enjoyable and safe with these tips below.
- Set Your Budget
Building your own fire pit is a fantastic way to save money. However, depending on the design, the project can cost you anywhere from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars. Before you get started, decide how much you want to spend on your DIY fire pit. If you're on a tight budget, you can still build a gorgeous firepit. Look around your property and see what items you can repurpose. Old pavers, cement blocks, or retaining wall bricks are perfect materials for building a fire pit. Just a layer of sand to hold the pavers in place. Or, if you have an old koi pond, you no longer use, remove the water and transform it into a fire pit. Just make sure that the rocks in the pond are non-combustible. Should you have a little wiggle room in your budget, there's no limit to the design possibilities for your fire pit. Use concrete and mold to cast an inviting fire pit, or add glass walls to a metal planter for a contemporary look.
- Decide on Your Preferred Fuel Source
Another detail to keep in mind is what kind of fuel you'd prefer to use. If you have your heart set on a wood-burning fire pit, you'll want to check that your fire pit's design provides ample space for the logs and allows enough airflow for the fire to thrive. Gel fuel canisters are another popular fuel source for DIY fire pits. These canisters are available at many home improvement stores and retailers that sell home goods. A benefit of these canisters is that you can use them to customize the appearance of the flame. Just add more canisters for a larger flame. They also work well in smaller fire pits. You can add stones or glass rocks to use with the gel fuel canisters to customize the aesthetics of your fire pit.
- Make Sure Your Fire Pit is Safe
While our real estate agents know the value that a lovely outdoor space can add to a home, it's important that these spaces are safe for your family and your home. Fire pits should be at least 10 feet away from your home or any outside buildings. Make sure the fire pit is in an open area clear of trees, vegetation, or brush. If you plan to house your fire pit on your deck, you'll want to add a fireproof mat underneath the fire pit if you prefer a wood-burning fire pit. This will prevent the flames from damaging your deck or catching it on fire. Or, you can stick with gel fuel canisters that are considered safe for deck usage.
