Pickleball has been exploding in popularity across the U.S., and the Richmond area is no exception. Our REALTORS® highlight five places to play pickleball in our area.
Why Pickleball?
Pickleball is like a combination of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. The game combines elements of each, making it fun, fast-paced and easy to pick up for beginners. Some people describe it as giant ping pong, except you're standing on the table. However you look at it, it's a lot of fun!
One element making made pickleball popular is, even though it packs a lot of action into a quick game, it's not too physically demanding. It's an excellent game for all ages. This year's West End Pickleball Classic, held by the Pickleball Club of Chesterfield County, included more than 200 participants, with an age range from 10 to 83.
Play Pickleball in Richmond
Pickleball has become increasingly popular in the Richmond area in the last few years, and public demand for more pickleball facilities have paid off. Our local Parks & Recreation Department committed to building 18 new pickleball courts last year, and Richmond now has more places to play than ever before. These are some of our favorites:
- Harry G. Daniel Park, 6600 Whitepine Rd, Richmond, VA 23237
The six outdoor pickleball courts at Harry G. Daniel Park opened in 2018 to meet the growing demand for pickleball facilities. The courts are open to the public year-round, free of charge.
- Rockwood Park, 3401 Courthouse Rd, Richmond, VA 23236
When it opened up in 2014, the Scott Pickleball Center at Rockwood Park was one of the only places to play pickleball in Richmond. Today, it's not so hard to find great places to play pickleball near Richmond homes for sale, but Rockwood Park is a favorite place for locals.
- Pouncey Tract Park, 4747 Pouncey Tract Rd, Glen Allen, VA 23059
Some of our best Glen Allen homes for sale are just around the corner from Pouncey Tract Park. The site where four pickleball courts were recently built and where eight more are scheduled to be completed by fall 2019. The courts are free and open to the public daily from dawn to dusk, and the park also offers lovely picnic areas, multipurpose fields, and hiking trails.
- Chesterfield Career and Technical Center, 13900 Hull Street Rd, Midlothian, VA 23112
The 12 pickleball Courts at the Hull Street Campus of Chesterfield Career and Technical Center – known as CCC Hull, for short – offer plenty of opportunities to play pickleball. Local pickleball leagues utilize these courts throughout much of the year, and there are beginner practice courts as well. CCC Hull is also just minutes from these Midlothian homes for sale.
