The permanent collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts includes more than 33,000 works of art that span 5,000 years of world history. Highlights include:

• American Art: From the 17th to 20th centuries, the American Art collection includes 2,700 objects, with works by Edward Hopper, John Trumbull, John James Audubon, George Innes and Max Weber.
• European Art: Check out more than 10,000 pieces in the museum's collection of European art, including works by Bacchiacca, Poussin, Gentileschi, Goya, and Bouguereau, as well as a collection of 18th and 19th century English silver and the largest collection of Fabergé eggs outside of Russia.
• Native American Art: The Robert and Nancy Nooter Collection

• Ancient Art: Since 1936, the museum has amassed a tremendous collection of Ancient Egyptian, Ancient Greek, Phrygian, Etruscan, Ancient Roman, and Byzantine art and artifacts.
• Photography: Made up of around 2,000 photographs, this collection represents the most important developments in the history of the medium, as well as essential 20th- and 21st-century photographers like André Kertész, Gordon Parks, Edward Weston, Cindy Sherman and Sally Mann.
• African American Art: The museum's collection of African American art has been growing since 1945, and now encompasses an incredible variety of African, African American, and African Diasporic artists.
• Contemporary Art: The Modern and Contemporary Art collection includes 20th-century European art, American art from after 1950, and 21st-century art from around the world.
• Asian Art: The museum offers collections of both East Asian and South Asian art, including Indian and Himalayan art as well as centuries worth of paintings, ceramics, prints, sculptures, metalwork and textiles from China and Japan.
