Anyone who has spent some time in Hopewell, VA is probably familiar with the Hopewell Downtown Partnership (HDP). HDP is an organization focused on building a vibrant and prosperous downtown area for the Hopewell community.
It's behind many initiatives throughout the year that help to give Hopewell its unique character.
Hopewell, VA is a charming little city of about 23,000 people that overlooks two rivers – the James and Appomattox. Founded in 1613 and originally associated with the Quakers, it has been on the rise since an ambitious urban renewal plan launched in the 1960s.
Although the original idea hit snags, it sparked greater community interest in rebuilding the downtown area. That inspiration has carried forward to today, where the Hopewell Downtown Partnership is one of the most active community groups of its kind anywhere in the country.
The Hopewell Downtown Partnership is committed to the highest standards of quality, and it shows – just ask Main Street America™ , which accredits similar community groups for following strict standards in community revitalization and involvement.
HDP was one of only 24 community groups throughout the state of Virginia to be accredited.
In recent years, HDP has consistently maintained the credential. It depends, among several other things, on demonstrating broad-based community support and reporting results regularly. Community members must be deeply involved in the organization's work, too.
The Main Street America™ program was founded in 1980 and has been adopted by more than 1,000 communities coast to coast. It delivers a program of restoration for historic commercial district by balancing preservation and economic development.
Hopewell Downtown Project has been accredited since 2011. 828 programs made the cut this year. Accreditation of organizations throughout the U.S. is managed by a state-level Main Street program, which in turn coordinates with the National Main Street Center.
During its accreditation period, HDP has sparked more than $7 million in public and private investment in the Hopewell downtown area. Burnette's Baked Goods, K&J Fitness, and a variety of others have been attracted partially through HDP's work.
Hopewell homes benefit from all the hard work done in the downtown area and so much more. A growing downtown means a strong economic engine and diverse jobs for people at any stage of their careers – essential for a growing community you may want to make your own.
