Located in Central Virginia, approximately 25 miles south of Richmond, Colonial Heights is considered part of the Richmond-Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area with a population of approximately 957,300. With a land area of 8.14 square miles, it is bounded on the north, west and east by Chesterfield County and on the south by the city of Petersburg. The cities of Colonial Heights, Petersburg and Hopewell make up what is commonly known as the Tri-Cities area.

The city provides many recreational and historical facilities for its residents to enjoy. The five recreational parks offer numerous year-round activities for all ages. Shepherd Stadium is a 1,300 seat baseball stadium where many games and baseball camps are held. A famous Civil War Museum—Violet Bank, is in a location where Robert E. Lee used as his headquarters during the Civil War. Additionally, many institutions of higher education are located nearby.

Conveniently located to major highways, Colonial Heights enjoys direct access to I-95, which is the primary north-south corridor for the eastern seaboard. Access to I-85, I-64 and I-295 are also within close proximity. U.S. 460 runs through the city and provides transportation east and west. The Richmond International Airport, offering approximately 75 daily departures, is located east of Richmond and approximately 35 miles from Colonial Heights. Several railway facilities are located nearby, and in addition, Amtrak provides passenger service from Richmond.

The city's goal is to promote business development and expansion to enhance the quality and standard of living for everyone. With the opening of Southpark Mall in 1989, a regional shopping complex containing more than 2 million square feet of commercial retail space and generating over $4 million in additional tax revenue for the city, the area has become a mecca for giant retailers, specialty retailers and office space seekers.
