With a population of
approximately 22,000+ people, Powhatan
County is one of the fastest growing
localities in Richmond.
Its large lot lifestyle is what beckons families looking for a setting that
combines privacy and convenience. Powhatan's major thoroughfares allow for an
easy commute to Metropolitan Richmond. Route 288, the outside western beltway
for Richmond,
runs through the eastern end of Powhatan and provides easy access to
Interstates 64, 95, and 295 via Routes 60 and 711.
Created in 1777 and originally settled by French Huguenots escaping religious
persecution, Powhatan
County is named for the
father of the famous Indian Princess Pocahontas. Powhatan County
is home to venerable old estates, handsome historic buildings, verdant
pastures, riding schools and stables. Beautiful new subdivisions, with lots
of two acres or more, can be found throughout Powhatan. Powhatan's citizens
are dedicated to preserving the County's rich heritage, rural atmosphere, and
sense of community.
Located between the James and Appomattox
Rivers, Powhatan County's
recreational opportunities abound. Fishing, boating, canoeing, camping,
golfing, picnicking and gardening, are just a few of the many activities
Powhatan residents enjoy on a daily basis. A two-hundred-acre park, which has
several athletic fields, playgrounds, hiking trails, a YMCA facility, and
library, is available for residents to enjoy. The new Virginia State Golf
Association statewide golf center, which offers 18 holes of championship
golf, a 23,000-square-foot clubhouse, education center, museum and library,
turf grass research center, instructional learning center and a dormitory, is
located in Powhatan near Route 288.
Powhatan's students enjoy excellent public and private schools, the latter
being Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot, a Catholic school from kindergarten through
grade twelve. A new public high school near Flatrock,
the county's central shopping area, opened in 2003.
