What to Look for in a Home

You have chosen the best real estate agent, been pre-approved for your mortgage and, now, the challenge is to find the perfect home. Do you know what to look for?

It's important to consider many factors before deciding on the house that you will ultimately choose for your new home. Be prepared with a pen, tape measure and flashlight to help you see and record important features. Feel free to open closets and cabinetry. Look in storage areas and crawl spaces. Most sellers provide information sheets about the home, add your own notes to these fact sheets. As you preview each home, be mindful of these additional considerations:

  • Will your furniture fit in the new spaces?
  • Are there enough bathrooms to serve the needs of your family now and in the near future?
  • Are there comfortable spaces for the overnight visitors you anticipate?
  • Is there plenty of storage space and is it easily accessed?
  • Which schools serve this address? Are there other children in the area?
  • How far is the home from work, school or recreation?
  • Will pets be comfortable in the new surroundings? Does the community have pet restrictions?
  • What kind of repairs will be required right away? What kind of ongoing maintenance will be required?
  • How old are the heating, cooling and roofing systems?
  • Is the home protected against unexpected repairs by a home warranty plan?

Your Napier Realtors® ERA agent will best be able to help you if you openly share your concerns or questions. Take a close look at the home, then ask any questions. Consider obtaining a home inspection. A qualified inspector can point out potentially costly repairs and will be able to give good advice about maintaining the home in the future.
